5 Steps to Decode a Siemens Motor Part Number (Without Calling Support)

If you're the person stuck between a sales rep who needs a motor quote by tomorrow and an engineer who only knows the old part number, this is for you.
I'm an office administrator for a 150-person manufacturing company. I manage all our motor and drive purchases—roughly $200k annually across 8 vendors. When I took over purchasing in 2020, the Siemens motor part number breakdown was basically a foreign language to me. I wasted hours on the phone with distributors trying to verify specs. This checklist is what I wish I'd had on day one.
Below are 5 steps to read any Siemens motor part number. Follow them in order, and you'll be able to pull the catalog number, frame size, and electrical specs without picking up the phone.
Step 1: Find the Catalog Number Prefix
Siemens motor part numbers usually start with a pattern like 1LA7, 1LE1, or 1FK7. That first alphanumeric block tells you the motor family.
- 1LA – standard induction motor (e.g., 1LA7, 1LA9)
- 1LE – high-efficiency IE3/IE4 motors
- 1FK – servomotors for motion control
- 1PH – main spindle drives
- 1FT – synchronous motors
Here's something vendors won't tell you: the second digit often indicates the frame size generation. For example, 1LA7 is an older series. If you see a replacement recommendation, it'll likely be 1LE1 with improved efficiency. Don't assume they're interchangeable without checking the mounting dimensions.
Step 2: Decode the Frame Size
Right after the prefix, you'll see numbers like 132, 160, or 200. This is the frame size in millimeters (center shaft height). A 132M frame means the shaft center is 132mm from the mounting base.
The letter after the number indicates the frame length:
- S – Short
- M – Medium (most common)
- L – Long (higher output for same shaft height)
In my first year, I made the classic mistake of thinking a 132L could bolt directly into a 132S mounting. Learned that lesson the hard way when the motor was 20mm too long to fit the enclosure. Cost me a $400 redo and a pissed-off maintenance manager.
Step 3: Identify the Winding Variant
After the frame size, you'll usually see a dash and a few characters, like -4AA0 or -2AB0. This is the winding code. It tells you the voltage, frequency, and connection type.
What most people don't realize is that the last character often indicates the terminal box position or cable entry. A 0 usually means standard top entry; a 1 might mean right-side entry. If your installation has tight conduit runs, this matters more than the horsepower rating.
Siemens publishes a winding code table in their "Catalog D 81.1" — it's basically a lookup PDF. I keep it bookmarked because I can't memorize all the combos. You don't need to either.
Step 4: Check the Voltage and Frequency Configuration
The same motor part number can cover multiple voltage ranges. Look for a separate voltage code or a second line on the nameplate. Common North American configurations:
- 230/460V – dual voltage, 60 Hz (standard US)
- 400V – single voltage, 50 Hz (European standard)
- 460V – single voltage, 60 Hz
I knew I should always confirm the voltage before ordering, but thought "what are the odds?" Well, the odds caught up with me when we ordered a motor for a 480V system and got a 230V unit. That wasn't a cheap swap.
Siemens usually includes the voltage in the part number suffix, but not always. If the suffix looks like -4AA0-Z, the Z is a customer-specific variant. You'll need to call the distributor to decode the Z suffix. That's honestly the one case where you can't skip the phone call.
Step 5: Verify the Mounting and Shaft Configuration
This is the step most people skip. The part number doesn't always tell you the mounting orientation (IM B3, IM B5, etc.) or the shaft dimensions. You need the product data sheet for that.
Common mounting types:
- IM B3 – foot-mounted (standard)
- IM B5 – flange-mounted with large flange
- IM B14 – flange-mounted with small flange
Siemens motor data sheets are freely available on their support portal. Search by the catalog number (the full 1LA7... string) and look for the dimensional drawing. The shaft diameter and keyway size will be there. I've ordered a motor that looked right on paper but had a 28mm shaft instead of 24mm — total no-go for the coupling we had.
If you're sourcing from a distributor who's not Siemens-authorized, double-check the shaft specs. Counterfeit motors often use standard frames with off-spec shafts to save cost.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Skipped the data sheet check — don't. The part number and nameplate tell you about 80% of what you need. The other 20% (shaft runout tolerance, bearing type, paint color) is in the data sheet.
Assuming stock availability based on part number alone. Siemens has standard catalog numbers and custom variants. A -Z suffix almost always means special production. Lead time can jump from 2 weeks to 10 weeks.
Not checking for supersession. Siemens updates motor series every 5-7 years. An 1LA7 might be superseded by 1LE1. The new part number is not backward-compatible without checking the frame dimensions. I made that mistake once and now I always cross-reference on the Siemens Industry Online Support portal.
